Are you finding it challenging to plan strategically? At this time of year, as many clients plan their strategies for the next three to five years, it’s surprising how relevant a 1997 Harvard Business Review article, “Strategy Under Uncertainty,” remains today. Some highlights from this article include: As you plan, develop your external scenarios and be clear about what can cause you to make changes to your strategic direction. Once clear on the external factors and leading indicators you will track, set your strategy, focusing on what you can control. Place your bets on where you are taking your organization, given market uncertainty. With your goals set, develop your initiatives. For each initiative, be clear and specific about your investments, accountability, stakeholders, timeframes and measurements. A plan is only useful if you have defined and acted on its implementation. At least quarterly, review your scenarios and leading indicators and understand the implications to your plan. Keep it simple, do not take on too much at one time, and be prepared to adjust based on market conditions. Last and not least, communicate, communicate, communicate. Every employee should know and be able to articulate your organization’s strategy. We welcome your questions and insights on strategy. Please let me know how we can assist you.Best regards,Contact Dava
